Reflection is a powerful late-binding mechanism that allows you to examine, modify, and create objects at runtime. This means you can use information not available at compile-time to decide how your program should behave, including adding code later on in the form of extension modules. We examined how .NET performs binding: Early (static) bound calls are fixed; if the call is executed, it will always lead to the same code being executed, regardless of the state of the program. Late bound calls are dynamic; they take account of the runtime type of objects. Polymorphism in .NET is handled through late binding of methods. Overloading, however, does not always use late binding. Reflection can be used to perform late binding using information ignored by static and runtime bound calls. You can use it to access overloaded methods based on the runtime type of parameters, and to access methods defined by complex protocols that can t be declared in an interface. Reflection can also bind types and assemblies dynamically. Reflection relies on metadata being present at runtime to allow its dynamic binding. .NET provides a lot of metadata, and allows programmers to add metadata in the form of attributes. They can even define their own custom attributes. We examined the reasons reflection exists, and some cases where its use is necessary.

Macros can be used in a wide variety of commands, including Host and service check commands Host and service notifications Host and service event handlers Host and service obsession commands Host and service performance data processing commands Although macros can be used in all of these command types, not all macros can be used in all commands. Nagios calls this macro context. Macro context means that not all macros make sense in the context of certain types of commands. For example, the $HOSTNAME$ macro can be used in all types of command objects, but the $SERVICECDESC$ macro can only be used in service check, service notification, service obsession, and service performance data processing commands. It cannot be used in a host check command. This is because in a host check command the $SERVICEDESC$ macro has no context since no service is being referenced. There are far too many macros to list in this book, but I ve covered some of the significant ones in this and other chapters. You can also see a full list in the Nagios documentation at http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/macros.html. This list also documents the context of all the available macros and in what types of commands they can be used.

n the previous chapter, we discussed the advantages of dynamic object binding, and you learned that reflection is a mechanism you can use to perform dynamic binding from your programs. You saw how dynamic binding relies on metadata stored in assemblies, and then considered an overview of .NET s Reflection API. We discussed how the classes associated with it can be used to discover, examine, and manipulate the contents of an assembly, by accessing its metadata. In this chapter, we ll start playing with some reflection classes by using them in our programs. We ll concentrate on the passive use of reflection in this chapter: examining the types of objects; searching through assemblies for classes, interfaces, and their members; and retrieving their metadata. We ll leave more active uses of reflection invoking methods, manipulating properties, and instantiating objects via reflection until later chapters. The chapter begins by considering what metadata is available to the reflection system by looking at what exactly assemblies contain. You ll see why you would want to examine and retrieve assembly-level metadata, and how to do this using the classes of the Reflection API. We ll look at two classes that are particularly important to reflection: System.Reflection.Assembly, which contains information about an assembly, and System.Type, which contains information about the type (the class) of an object. You ll then see how to retrieve the type of an object as well as the metadata associated with its members. Finally, we ll take a close look at the info classes used as containers for class member metadata.

the ability of a program to translate a graphical model into the actual software code represented by the model is an example of CASE. Generally speaking, if the modeling software has some ability to interact, change, or create the application code or underlying data structures, it is said to have some CASE capacity.

Once the nrpe daemon is configured and running, we need to configure service obsession and NSCA to send passive check results to the slave server. To do this, follow the steps in the Distributed Server Configuration section earlier in this chapter. The master server performs the same function as a distributed server sending the check results, but instead of sending to a central server, it sends to the slave server. The slave server thus acts as the central server in the distributed monitoring model.
