Both of these tools are written by The Scripting Guys, and they re worth checking out just for the entertainment value provided by the documentation. These tools generate scripts that are ready to use, which makes the tools useful for scripting novices. But they also provide a great assist to scripting pros, not only because they relieve some of the typing drudgery, but because they expose objects and properties that are not readily discovered otherwise. Note, however, that you can t use a script to control another computer that s running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed with default settings. That s because Windows Firewall on the remote computer blocks execution of WMI scripts. To make these scripts work, you need to go to each remote computer and open the appropriate ports in the firewall, which you can do with the following script:

If you redirect a user s Application Data and the user encrypts files or fold ers using the Encrypting File System (EFS), the user may not be able to decrypt their EFS encrypted folders when they are not connected to the network. This occurs because their encryption keys are stored in the Application Data folder structure. For Windows 2000 Profes sional systems, network connectivity isn t an immediate issue because the encryption keys are stored in memory. However, if the user restarts, this can become an issue if network con nectivity is still not available. For Windows XP Professional systems, loss of network connec tivity could become an immediate issue for users trying to decrypt EFS encrypted files because the user s encryption keys are not stored in memor y.

An iterator is an object that allows you to traverse through a collection s elements. What is named an iterator in .NET is also known as a generator in other languages such as Python, or sometimes a cursor, especially within the context of a database. You may not know what an iterator is, but you surely have used several of them before! Each time you use a foreach loop (For Each in VB.NET), an iterator is involved. (This isn t true for arrays because the C# and VB.NET compilers optimize foreach and For Each loops over arrays to replace the use of iterators by a simple loop, as if a for loop were used.) Every .NET collection (List<T>, Dictionary<T>, and ArrayList for example) has a method named GetEnumerator that returns an object used to iterate over its contents. That s what foreach uses behind the scenes to iterate on the items contained in a collection. If you re interested in design patterns, you can study the classical Iterator pattern. This is the design iterators rely on in .NET. An iterator is similar, in its result, to a traditional method that returns a collection, because it generates a sequence of values. For example, we could create the following method to return an enumeration of integers:

The following script, named Journal.vbs, helps you keep an ad hoc journal by opening a text file and adding a time stamp, as shown in Figure 15-12. For consistency with other scripts in this chapter, we ve included comments, used standard naming conventions, included errorchecking routines, and otherwise dressed up Journal.vbs. But at its heart, this script demonstrates how you can use scripting to perform simple automation tasks merely by having a script launch a program or play back keystrokes.
